A thoroughly likeable performance, if that isn't too bland a statement, from THE MINACK. A winning point-to-pointer, the seven-year-old had been brought along slowly over hurdles with fences in mind and he looks a possible Cheltenham horse on this evidence. Although his head-carriage leaves him looking a tad ungainly, he was thoroughly in charge in this race having jumped well throughout. Rougham had taken the field along for the early stages but he was forced to surrender his lead to Bouggler at the open ditch and although he battled away back in third he never really looked like challenging the big boys; this developed into a straight shootout between Bouggler and The Minack turning for home. Bouggler, having been niggled along for a fair way (having looked like he wasn't concentrating more than anything else), was joined at the third last and The Minack went up by a neck. Two professional jumps later, under a confident Nick Scholfield, and victory was his. This was over 2m5f and the most obvious races at Cheltenham are the new Jewson Novices' race and the RSA. The former may be the favoured run, as he looks a horse with plenty of speed, indeed it wouldn't be the upset of the century were he to launch an Arkle challenge although that looks unlikely. The runner-up is a battler and ran well under his 6lb penalty; he was a Grade One winner over hurdles and, at the age of six, has every chance of adding to that over fences, especially at somewhere like Aintree. Persian Run was never really in the hunt, but the bigger disappointment was Lord Ragnar. This was his first run over fences and his first of the season however he ran a flat race, getting outpaced even before the pace had quickened. On this evidence, it wouldn't be a huge shock to see him fitted with headgear for future starts.
