Kicking King (2004) was the last winner of this race to break through into the ranks of the top class although Golden Silver - the winner two seasons ago - has enjoyed plenty of success. The race lost some of its lustre with the departure of Flat Out at the second last when still travelling strongly. The grey had travelled strongly behind the early pace and was just being produced to challenge for the lead when giving his young rider no chance with a bad mistake. There was the propensity for this to be run at a good gallop with three runners that like to force the pace in the line-up but Mr Cracker headed Saludos after the first on this drop back in trip and step up in class and took them along at a good, sensible gallop. He stayed there until between the last two fences but was readily left behind by the front two. REALT DUBH was held-up on the inside and jumped and travelled well; he progressed into a close fourth three from home, moved into second between the final two and jumped the last alongside Noble Prince who made him pull out all the stops. The runner-up appeared to draw level on the run to the line but just couldn't get past as Realt Dubh responded to a strong drive from Paul Carberry and kept pulling out a little more. Noble Prince had raced alongside Realt Dubh in the early exchanges but was pulled wider on the course by Barry Geraghty after a couple of minor mistakes early on. He didn't travel as well as the winner and was being kept up to his work from some way out but took closer order approaching the third last before progressing to contest the lead at the last; he had two cracks at the winner and kept coming back for more and was only narrowly denied. He had finished five lengths behind Realt Dubh over C&D prior to this so looks to have progressed and further improvement can be expected when he's stepped up to two and a half miles which was his optimum over hurdles. He may not have been second last time but for Saludos' final fence fall but Jessica Harrington's runner took a step backwards here as he already looked to be struggling when a bad mistake at the third last put paid to any chance that he may have held.
