Pat Rodford saddled Sparky May to be second in the David Nicholson Mares' race on Tuesday but he went one place better here with a ten-year-old handicapper who seems to have suddenly sprung to life. HOLMWOOD LEGEND was a comfortable winner at Sandown just five days previous, picking up a 5lb penalty which ensured a run in this contest. Never too far off a strong tempo set by Aimigayle, Bible Lord and Edgbriar, he jumped soundly for Keiran Burke (who will soon take over the training license from Rodford) and moved into the lead just after the third last whilst still travelling well. His rider sensibly kicked him on at this point, and although he was a bit untidy at the last, there was no danger of anything else flying home to pick him up. Aimigayle had been pulled-up on her previous start, but she ran a great race. Always up with the pace, she got a little shuffled back three from home but stayed on dourly after the last for second. She's been a good horse for the yard and will be a player when faced with her own sex again. The eye-catcher of the race was Beautiful Sound. Connections would have preferred to have run him over further, and after jumping poorly for the first circuit it was fairly clear that he was going to struggle. He really started to motor coming down the hill though and was making up ground hand over fist near the line. He's not the most experienced over fences, and probably found this coming too soon in his career, however he'd be a fascinating contender for something like the Kim Muir in 12 months time. Consigliere is fairly handicapped and he proved this point by staying on for a never truly threatening fourth, just ahead of the game mare Call Me A Legend who also came from off the pace. Matuhi was hampered by the fall of Just Smudge four fences from home but ran on well after, whilst Bible Lord paid the price for trying to match strides with the pace-setters early on; a late mistake didn't help either. Storymaker was an eye-catcher as he stayed on from another parish, whilst Gansey tried to match strides with the early leaders but got very tired after the turn for home. Hollo Ladies jumped poorly in the rear and disappointed as did the well-backed Aigle D'or who was kept to the inside throughout but several mistakes didn't aid his cause; a shorter trip also seems to suit better, as does bullying inferior rivals.
