A dramatic conclusion to a contest which ultimately saw ZARKANDAR run out a narrow victor from Kumbeshwar. However the story of the race was the second-last flight of hurdles, as the long-time leader Palawi took a crashing fall, bringing down Grandouet in the process. Ultimately this left the first two miles clear and they jumped the final flight as one. Zarkandar came away quicker from the hurdle, but had to be ridden strongly by Ruby Walsh to try and assert. However he couldn't shake the runner-up off, who having been switched in the final 100 yards, ran on strongly and was only just over a length down at the line. The winner looks a tad lazy at times, and he was one of the first realistic challengers to come off the bridle before the home turn. However he answered all of his jockey's calls, and having showed at Cheltenham that staying was his forte, he was never going to lose out late on when the chips were down. The runner-up is as brave as a lion, and he certainly takes his racing well. We may even see him again this year, perhaps at Punchestown, and in all likelihood he will run with great credit once again. It's impossible to try and second guess what would have happened with a clean race, but it should be said that Grandoeut was yet to really come off the bridle when departing. He wasn't as fluent at his hurdles as at Cheltenham, but, ridden more patiently than last time, he was creeping onto the heels of the leaders when brought down. He jumped the hurdle fine, but could do nothing about the stricken Palawi and crumpled to the floor accordingly. The aforementioned Palawi, a flashy chestnut, had taken the field along and still held every chance when smacking into the flight. He had not met all of his hurdles on a good stride, but he was far from done with when departing. Ultimately Houblon Des Obeaux was third, but he is a prospect for the future and was never likely to be a major threat here on ground too quick for him.
