A disappointing performance from hot-favourite Recital, as Aidan O'Brien's potential Derby hope blotted his copybook. The winner certainly didn't though, as Jim Bolger's filly BANIMPIRE showed a great attitude to wrestle a victory away from Regent Street. Settled in third for most of the way, Kevin Manning made a move at the three furlong pole and pushed his horse closer, before taking a share of the lead a furlong from home. The first two had a real battle up the run-in, and she just came out on top. It's unlikely that this was a stellar renewal, and if she heads to the Oaks then she will need to improve, however she certainly has a heart. The runner-up was acting as a pacemaker really, and disputed nearly all the running with stablemate Exodus. This was a massive step up from his Dundalk maiden win and this unexposed son of Galileo looks sure to be the first-string wherever he goes next. Exodus weakened away at the furlong pole (he was rushed up in the first 100 yards after missing the break), as Rich Tapestry and Recital stayed on with greater zest. The latter was keen in the early stages (as he had been in a previous racecourse gallop at the Curragh), and Ryan Moore seemed at pains to drop him out towards the rear. He still had a lot of ground to make up turning for home, and his initial run was just hampered slightly as he had to manoeuvre a gap. Once out in the clear he picked up fairly well, but he didn't have the turn of foot on this ground to wear down the leaders. He certainly had enough time to get there, but with his awkward head carriage, he never looked like getting there. He shouldn't be written off on just this run but is he is ground dependant (both wins on testing ground), then it appears very unlikely that a Derby in June will be his cup of tea. Rich Tapestry came next; he was under pressure before the home turn and was far from disgraced. He is out of a full sister to Refuse To Bend and he's not one to give up on just yet. Mawaakef was a big disappointment. He was part of the leading four who tried to kick on with half a mile to run, but fared worst of all finishing last of all. This was obviously not his true form and he was beaten before the longer trip became an issue.
