A fair race for the grade saw a terrific finish fought out between DANDINO and Native Ruler who appeared to have done plenty of work ahead of this first run in 631 days. Dandino improved by 36lbs last season having begun with a maiden win in April and having signed off finishing down the field in the Japan Cup in November. He had made a smooth return to action at Ripon to prove that he had trained on and raced closer to the pace than has often been the case in this small field. There were five horses in a line with three furlongs to run suggesting that the pace set by Monitor Closely had been no more than modest but he, and Native Ruler, gradually clawed their way clear of the field. Dandino looked beaten within yards of the line but managed to produce one final lunge to gain a first Group race success. Native Ruler had been talked of as a Derby prospect in 2009 but had failed to live up to those expectations after winning his maiden. This was a fine return to action and it's reasonable to expect this half-brother to Sixties Icon to stay further and he does have an entry in the Yorkshire Cup but that could well come too soon. Indian Days had picked up a penalty for his Group Two win in Turkey and ran as well as can have been expected whilst Campanologist's yard has yet to saddle a winner this season from only a handful of runners and he can be expected to improve for this first run since the Melbourne Cup. The disappointment of the race was the hitherto consistent Laaheb who had finished fourth in the Dubai Sheema Classic last month. He found disappointingly little when asked to quicken but it's possible that his trip to the UAE took more out of him than connections had thought to be the case.
