FRANKEL produced a quite astonishing performance to blow his rivals away to confirm all the evident promise of his juvenile season and silence the naysayers. The detractors or those merely playing devil's advocate had pointed to his getting a little worked up and racing keenly and that he momentarily looked to be struggling in the Greenham against an inferior rival. Picture Editor had run in the Greenham as a pacemaker but couldn't go quickly enough for his stablemate and Rerouted was expected to play the same role here. Connections had come up with a different plan though and allowed Frankel to set his own gallop and settle in front; Tom Queally had soon built up a clear advantage and it was remarkable how well he was travelling with his rivals toiling behind. The question then was whether he could maintain this astonishing show of speed to the line or whether the exertions would take their toil but the result was never in doubt as one by one his rivals cried enough. Dubawi Gold and Native Khan did close the gap to six lengths from around 15 lengths at the bushes but both Queally and Henry Cecil felt that the son of Galileo was only idling in front. No decision has been made as to where he will head next; he remains favourite for the Derby but that is surely a trip too far given his natural speed although connections were not ruling out the Dante over a quarter of a mile less. Much could depend on how stablemate World Domination fares in his Derby trial as well as how Frankel himself copes over the longer trip but it would be no surprise to see him remain over a mile this season with the St James' Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot an obvious objective. Dubawi Gold has progressed well for Richard Hannon this season and confirmed the impression that he'd made in winning two Listed polytrack races to give chase from the rear of the field. He did well to keep the more stoutly bred Native Khan at bay for second and adds to Hannon's already strong hand in the mile division. Connections mentioned the Irish 2000 Guineas and the Jersey Stakes as possible targets. Native Khan had been very weak in the market despite being reported to have come on for his win in the Craven Stakes; the Racing Post Trophy fourth travelled better than many of those that tried to race close to the pace and emerges from the race with plenty of credit. Connections are looking at either the Epsom or French Derby. There was some doubt about Fury's ability to stay a mile but he got the trip okay despite appearing to feel the fast ground; he can do better again back on a softer surface. It's hard not to think that Slim Shadey and Happy Today are flattered by their proximity as some of their more fancied rivals cut their own throats by attempting to lay up with Frankel in the early stages of the contest. Casamento was a notable victim and the Racing Post Trophy winner should be able to bounce back when stepped up in trip. Pathfork was another that appeared to pay the price for trying to chase the fractions and there will also be other days for him whilst Ryan Moore reported that Roderic O'Connor was unable to lay up with the pace and a step up in trip surely beckons. Saamidd looked very smart when winning the Champagne Stakes but flopped in the Dewhurst and didn't show here; he now has plenty to prove. Rerouted and Loving Spirit ran creditably and will fare better when dropped back in class.
