This Listed race hasn't really thrown up any winners of note in recent years but this was another taking performance from OCEAN WAR under the burgeoning talent of Mikael Barzalona. A 320,000 guineas yearling purchase, he had shown some promise on debut in a Sandown maiden behind better fancied stablemate Borug when shaping as though he'd inherited more of his sire's stamina than his dam's speed. That impression was confirmed on his reappearance in a course and distance maiden when he won well despite still looking very green. The third home had franked the form earlier in the week when winning at Kempton whilst the field also contained Henry Cecil's well-regarded newcomer Midsummer Sun. He was a little slow to break but was always travelling comfortably in a steadily run race and came from last to stay on strongly having been switched around the field. He still looked a little green when hitting the front and can improve again. He has an entry in the Derby but doesn't obviously have the pace for that level although connections will surely give him the chance to put himself in the frame next time. Cai Shen had quickened impressively to make a winning reappearance at Newbury and looked to be travelling strongly in behind the pace as the tempo increased. He was kept in by the winner who got first run on him as a result but didn't really make any inroads into Ocean War's advantage when out in the open although he readily held Treasury Devil. John Gosden's runner had floundered at Sandown on ground that had been softened by overnight rain but fared much better here in plugging on for third. He is still in the Dante and the St James's Palace Stakes but those entries look a little fanciful on this evidence. Discoteca set his own pace and will need to improve if he's to get competitive at this level. Namibian had looked unlucky not to be involved in the finish of a valuable sales race over course and distance and the form had already been franked by the first two home but he was readily reeled in after momentarily hitting the front and was made to look rather onepaced; this was disappointing but his jockey wasn't too hard on him once his chance was gone and he may fare better once stepped up in trip later in the season. He finished just in front of the favourite Hamlool who has several big race entries and finished just half a length behind Dubawi Gold last time. He was expected to appreciate this longer trip but looked a little bit unbalanced and may not have let himself down on this ground.
