A maiden that Richard Hannon has won with Strong Suit, Major Cadeaux and Canford Cliffs whilst Brian Meehan introduced his smart juvenile Gallagher in this contest in 2008 and runners from both of those yards showed up prominently in this year's renewal which should throw up winners all the way down. A finish of heads went to WISE VENTURE who may have been returned at a long price but the yard does get the occasional smart juvenile and the trainer regards this colt as 'a bit special' and indicated that he won't have a hard campaign as a result. He didn't make any obvious appeal on paper and only cost 8000 guineas as a foal but couldn't be faulted on this racecourse debut. He broke well and travelled comfortably on the far side of the main group before being asked for his effort passing the three pole; he took a while to pick up but kept finding for fairly strong pressure and showed a good attitude to get his head in front on the line. Poole Harbour was the Hannon second string according to the market but had reportedly been working well and made a very pleasing debut. He was travelling better than anything with two furlongs to run and kept on well under predominantly hands and heels riding before just losing out to a rival that appeared more streetwise whereas his inexperience showed as he wandered off a straight line and closed the door on St Barths. St Barths' challenge was ended at that point as Richard Hills had to snatch up the son of Cadeaux Genereux just as he'd been attempting to go through the gap but this was an extremely encouraging debut from a colt who had reportedly been working well at home and he should come on a good deal for the experience as is customary with runners from his yard. Trumpet Major had been drawn in five but ended up making his challenge on the stands' side rail; it took a little while for the penny to drop but, once out in the open, he picked up really well and finished to such effect that he may well have been in front 20 yards past the post. Clive Cox has his string in good form and there was a significant morning move for Forest Row who lost all chance when breaking well but failing to pick up the bit and losing several lengths. He was clearly very green and was finishing better than anything in the final furlong; he should have little difficulty making amends next time and could be useful. All Nighter, a stablemate to St Barths, ran well for a long way before tiring and can make his presence felt in an average maiden. Main Focus improved on his debut at Goodwood and can progress again whilst the Hannon third string, Jacob Cats, also showed ability but Macdonald Mor failed to justify his prominent position in the market although he wasn't too far away at the two furlong pole and Frankie Dettori did have a glance down not long afterwards suggesting that something was amiss; he can be given another chance.
