The return to this trip, an experiment that had failed to work at Meydan in March, proved fruitful for ALEXANDER POPE, who may simply have not had the class to win at Group 2 level. He certainly had it to win this Group 3, when, after being settled towards the rear, he made smooth progress from three out, leading from the furlong pole and lengthening well. He looks highly likely to get 1m 4f on this evidence and with entries in both the St James's Palace and the King Edward VII it will be interesting to see how his trainer reads the situation in the run-up to Royal Ascot. He also has entries in both the Irish Derby and the Eclipse, though he will need further improvement to be winning either of those and a 50/1 quote for the latter tells its own story. Moriarty was ridden similarly patiently by Ryan Moore, who was content to sit right out at the back of the field. He made up ground easily enough when asked to do so, being brought around the outside presumably to avoid any traffic, but the winner was able to get in his challenge first and although Richard Hannon┬┐s charge stayed on he lacked the turn of foot produced by the winner. Nonetheless he looks capable of securing success in this grade given the right opportunity. Pacesetting Smartcity is very much an improving sort and after landing a 10f maiden last time he was allowed to go off at a price here, but despite being headed a furlong out he stuck on with a very willing attitude and managed to hold on for third. There is probably a fair bit more to come from him in this company and he too should stay further. Adilapour sported cheek pieces for the first time, but this reportedly lazy Azamour colt was hard at it three furlongs out and was disappointing in beating only two home. Sapphire Pendant failed to build on the promise of her first two outings but may not have been ideally suited by the fast ground.
