A quick-fire double for trainer Hughie Morrison as PISCO SOUR showed a good turn of foot to put this race to bed with two furlongs to run. He was ridden more patiently than when third in the Dante at York, and was able to put a Derby ninth behind him, with a real confidence boosting ride from Jimmy Fortune. He travelled well into the lead and then skipped two lengths clear of his rivals, before keeping the gallop up all the way to the line. His trainer believes he was undercooked and too fresh at Epsom and it will be interesting to see where he heads to next, presumably with a target in the next month or so on the agenda. Second home was Alkimos who ran very well, especially as he lacked cover on the outside of the field for quite a long way. He came from a similar position to the winner but was under pressure earlier in the race. To his credit he kept finding but one felt that his jockey didn't really believe that his mount was going to get there with half a furlong to run. The hard luck story of the race was the third home Slumber. He travelled well in midfield for a long way but found his passage severely blocked just as the race was hotting up. Once he could be angled out by Michael Hills the race had bypassed him and although he ran on when getting some open air, he had too much ground to make up on the leader. He can pick up a race like this and looks the sort of horse who could run big races on the continent later on in the season. Fourth home was Specific Gravity who stepped up on his earlier runs this season and he shaped as if a mile and a half may even eek out more improvement. Tazahum came next, perhaps paying the price for racing too keenly early on as he was another who lacked cover, whilst Laajooj, a long-striding son of Azamour, caught the eye staying on from off the pace. Hunter's Light got tired late on having held every chance with two furlongs to run, Happy Today dropped away after making the early running, whilst Midsummer Sun never threatened to get into the race from off the gallop. Marksmanship was involved in a bit of early scrimmaging but he settled well thereafter. However he only plugged on at the one pace after seemingly finding himself slightly outpaced and his lack of experience may have been as much a factor as anything.
