A convincing win from RED DUKE under a confident Kieren Fallon. The colt had been a big money purchase (£140 000) for current connections from the Doncaster Sales having fetched a relatively modest sum as a yearling and having shaped promisingly on debut at Pontefract before obliging in a Redcar maiden, he made light of the step up in grade on this occasion. Always chasing the leaders, the son of Hard Spun looked to be travelling particularly well and as Fallon steered his mount out from a rail position, he gave readily to defy Chandlery by a neck. Richard Hannon's charge came to win his race having followed a frenetic early pace set by Pearl Mix and Sehnsucht. Nosing to the front with a furlong to travel, he refused to give in as Red Duke edged past him but was always regrettably going to be second best. Silverheels proved his flop in the Norfolk Stakes to be all wrong and he was a creditable third. His future could lie over further. Pearl Mix ultimately paid the penalty for being on the pace whilst the well backed Fort Bastion stayed on into a never nearer fifth from an unpromising position. John Lightbody had proved particularly popular in the market beforehand but having started modestly, he never travelled and Silverstre de Sousa was always fighting a losing battle. Sir Glanton never showed whilst Commissar and Ghostwriting did not find a great deal having been held up in the early stages.
