MASKED MARVEL provided back-to-back successes for John Gosden and William Buick in the season's final Classic 12 months on from their victory with Arctic Cosmos. Always well positioned behind a gallop that appeared to be run at a quick-slow-quick tempo by Buthelezi and Rumh, the Montjeu colt was always travelling strongly and he could be called the winner with a quarter of a mile to run. Eighth in the Derby, he hadn't overly impressed when narrowly getting the better of Census at Newmarket but Jimmy Fortune had been forced to make the running on him that day and felt that he had idled in front and the colt certainly appreciated the return to being held-up. He took a few strides to master Seville but powered away in the final furlong to record a convincing success. Brown Panther had twice been beaten in Group company since demolishing a field (including Census) in a Royal Ascot handicap but things hadn't gone his way in the German Derby and he was short of peak fitness in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury. He tracked the winner through but had to be ridden quite hard to maintain his position entering the straight and never travelled as comfortably as Masked Marvel. However, to his credit, he kept finding and connections have plenty to look forwards to next year with Kieren Fallon reporting that conditions were on the fast side. Sea Moon was the unlucky horse in the race as the gaps closed on Olivier Peslier every time that he needed one to appear and he didn't get out into the open until the race was over at which point he picked up really well and would have been second in another few strides. There was never really the opportunity to go wide around horses and he found himself on the heels of Masked Marvel and the inside of Brown Panther at the top of the straight as the field rather bunched up which appeared to make up his mind to stick on the inside and try his luck there. His luck was out, however, and Sea Moon found himself short of room behind a weakening Seville with a rallying Brown Panther on his outside and dropped to fifth inside the final furlong before finally extricating himself in the final half a furlong. Peslier reported that he didn't have the gears to take the gaps when they appeared and that argument may well hold water as he's had plenty of time and room to be wound up in two wins on the Knavesmire this season. The loss of connections' regular jockey may well have proved costly as a result although this would surely have been conveyed to Peslier who may, in hindsight, have been better off risking a ban and trying to force his way out earlier in the straight rather than accepting the situation. Seville was well positioned and had a perfect passage throughout and travelled as well as the winner but didn't find as much as looked likely. His stomach for a fight has been called in to question this season and it looks increasingly the case that he doesn't have the desire to tough it out in the top grade as he struggled to respond once headed. Census came there with a strong challenge and just about managed to hold on to the coat-tails of the leaders from the two pole for half a furlong but his stamina wilted inside the distance and he couldn't sustain his challenge over the longer trip in this company. He is still relatively lightly raced though and connections are already looking forward to next season's campaign in the Cup races where he should be a force. Richard Hughes reported that conditions were on the fast side for his colt. Blue Bunting was the disappointment of the race with Frankie Dettori never looking entirely happy aboard the dual Oaks winner who could never quite get herself into contention; this may just have been a race too far in what has been a marvellous season. Genius Beast begun the season brightly but has struggled in the second half of the season and bowed out fairly tamely here; he could benefit from having his sights lowered and confidence boosted before returning next year.
