A second successive success for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes following the victory of King Torus 12 months ago in a race in which Shamardal, Sir Percy and Rio De La Plata have been the most notable recent winners. CHANDLERY appeared to be the first string of four Richard Hannon runners with Richard Hughes in the saddle and the pair were always perfectly placed in a slowly run race. Meeting Red Duke on 3lbs better terms for a neck from their running in the Superlative Stakes, he travelled well and scored a shade cosily but his 50-1 starting price and midfield finish in the Coventry Stakes suggests that he isn't very high up the pecking order at his yard. This appears to have been endorsed by his trainer suggesting that a valuable sales race at York could be next for the colt who should stay a mile in time. Rockinante had impressed in a Newmarket maiden on debut but that form had received a knock when the second finished well held although the race has thrown up other winners. He was well placed throughout and stuck to his task gamely without being able to close the gap on his stablemate. He has a Royal Lodge entry and a mile should be well within his compass this season but his yard have plenty of other options for that race and he'll need to step up considerably again in order to be amongst the principals there. Red Duke had appeared to have a little more up his sleeve at Newmarket and Kieren Fallon had suggested after the race that the Breeders' Cup would be a realistic target for the American bred colt. He didn't appear entirely at ease on the track and endured a torrid passage approaching the furlong marker until well inside the distance. He was eventually switched to the inside and picked up well to snatch third close home and would undoubtedly have given the winner something to think about granted a clear passage whilst a stronger pace would also have suited. He could bid for compensation in either the Champagne Stakes or Royal Lodge and also holds an entry in the Dewhurst in October if connections opt for a domestic campaign. Lethal Force is still a maiden but was only beaten under two lengths in the Coventry so this was a shade disappointing. He lugged in approaching the final furlong before straightening out and running on but wasn't able to repel the third. He got the trip well enough whilst a stronger pace and more conventional track may help to show him in a better light. Elkhart finished a similar distance behind the second as he had at Newmarket and appears to have run his race. Red Seventy was badly interfered with but looked to find this company a little too hot as did Minal who finished off his race to good effect to reverse last month's placings over six furlongs with Red Seventy.
