This is usually a well contested maiden and should throw up plenty of winners. FIRDAWS was all the rage for this having looked an unlucky loser on debut at Newbury, a race for which she was also well backed having been cut for the 1000 Guineas prior to her first appearance. She didn't make the impression that many would have hoped for but won with her ears pricked and, according to her trainer, is already in need of a step up to a mile. She wasn't well drawn but broke well and secured a good racing position although seeing plenty of daylight on the outside and receiving a bump from the free-running Biba Diva. She was still a shade green, wandering around and giving the runner-up a bump, but was going on strongly at the line and will have learned plenty for the experience; connections were reluctant to commit her to the Fillies' Mile, regarding her as one for next season and the future is bright. Whimsical was prominent in the market when disappointing behind the stable second string in a Newbury maiden. This was much more like it from this first foal of a five furlong winner who is by first season sire Strategic Prince whose first crop includes Phoenix Stakes winner La Collina. She should have little trouble going one better. Ralph Beckett has sent out just five juvenile winners this season and endured a lean August but there was plenty to like about the debut of Rhagori who showed up well for a long way before weakening. She possibly did a little too much in front and may benefit from a drop to six although her pedigree is a mixture of speed and stamina. Nothing got into this from off the pace with the front-running Biba Diva - who showed some ability before losing several places close home - failing to complete a clean sweep for the prominent racers. There were encouraging debuts from a number of those in behind, notably Dulkashe (who was always up there) and Miss Cap Estel and Safarjal who came home strongly. Baheeja, a stablemate to the winner, is related to winners and showed ability as did Monopoli - who was running satisfactorily, if a shade keenly - until being knocked sideways by Neil Callan's mount. Forgive was another second string to shape with promise. Kaylena is related to winners and should improve on this debut where she was wide throughout and made some late gains. Afnoon is bred to be useful but was clueless and can only improve but one or two juveniles from the yard have stepped up considerably from their first to second starts this season.
