A race that came under the spotlight more than might have been the case thanks to Frankel's victory 12 months ago and EKTIHAAM was sent off at a similarly short price. Roger Varian's colt had impressed on debut at Newbury in a race that has worked out well and his entries in the Dewhurst and Racing Post Trophy suggest that he is held in high regard. Always travelling well for Richard Hills, the further he went the better he went and he stretched right away in the final half a furlong to record a convincing success and was promptly cut for the Guineas. He should have little difficulty staying the trip with plenty of stamina on the dam-side of his pedigree and he's undoubtedly promising. There wasn't a great deal of depth to this contest however and a better gauge of his ability will be provided if he takes up one of his Group race engagements before the end of the season although his trainer reported that he'd be equally happy to sign him off for the season. Mizwaaj had finished in midfield in a valuable maiden at York and stepped up on that form here. He moved well into the race, briefly threatened to make a fight of it and wasn't given a hard time once it was obvious that he was not going to get the better of the winner; he should have little difficulty winning his maiden. Waseem Faris had won very easily at Bath before a lacklustre effort on the polytrack; he kept on steadily for third to take a step back in the right direction and appeared to see out this trip well enough. He has entries in the Mill Reef and Middle Park but has improvement to make to justify a place in those contests. Hot Sugar and Abshir Zain helped to set a steady gallop but were in trouble with fully two furlongs to run and will need their sights lowered.
