Just the four runners for a race whose best recent winner has been Denman but it was a terrific renewal nonetheless. Spirit River had jumped superbly when an odds-on favourite until taking a heavy fall 12 months ago and his season went downhill thereafter. He travelled quite well for much of this year's race but weakened tamely in the straight suggesting that something may well be amiss and his jumping still leaves plenty to be desired. Connections have their work cut out to get this useful hurdler - who was expected to rank highly amongst last year's novices - back to his best. He was the stable's second string this time around behind Albert Bartlett winner BOBS WORTH whose stamina won him the day under a good introductory ride. He was given plenty of time to recover having been knocked out of his stride by Cue Card at the fourth last and was still two lengths down jumping the last. His jumping was safe and economical, this was an excellent start to his chasing career and there's plenty to like about his professional attitude. Cue Card comes out as the best horse at the weights although the margin of defeat may have been greater but for their coming together four from home. This exuberant racer, who carries his head rather high, was allowed to stride on on this occasion and did little wrong in defeat. His jumping was pretty good in the main, he saw out the race well and connections will have every right to be pleased by this performance albeit that he has some way to go in order to reach the heights that had initially been hoped for. Mad Moose nearly parted company with his rider at the first fence but soon recovered and ran as well as can have been expected in this company. Connections picked up some nice prize money for this run and their gelding should continue to be competitive in his grade.
