RUBI LIGHT produced the kind of performance that he has threatened for a little while and gained a thoroughly deserved success. He may have been more at home in the testing conditions than some of his rivals but put the race to bed in a matter of strides when easily opening up an advantage of at least half a dozen lengths approaching three from home. He began to tire a little approaching the final fence but was entitled to having won the race in the country and never looked in any danger of being caught. That does raise a question of how much further he can stay but he has time on his side and was having just his ninth start over fences. The other factor that could decide where he goes in the future is the ground for, while he ran an excellent race to be third on good ground in the Ryanair in March, he does seem ideally suited by the testing conditions on which he's done the majority of his racing. Regardless of that, there is plenty to and he has a big future ahead of him. Joncol won this race in 2009 but has since raced almost exclusively over trips in excess of this distance and ran as though this test was now an inadequate one. He was badly outpaced and appeared to be struggling turning for home only to stay on as his reserves of stamina kicked in. Both horses hold entries for the Lexus over Christmas and this should have served as a decent prep run for Paul Nolan's gelding who will be fancied to reverse the form over the longer trip. Cooldine finished a remote third in a first time tongue tie and is a shadow of the horse that won the RSA Chase in 2009, his last success. He has had his problems and needs a stiffer test than this but went out like a light and is fast running out of excuses. Trafford Lad was a useful novice but injury problems prevented him from fulfilling his potential and this company is too demanding for him nowadays. Roi Du Mee attracted support with conditions in his favour and would have been third but for a heavy fall at the final fence; he is not yet in the same class as the first two home but was in the process of running a solid race and can continue to progress if none the worse for his fall. Tranquil Sea was pulled up before that fence and was a long way below par on ground that he has coped well enough with in the past. Kempes, winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup last year, suffered a fatal injury.
