Donald McCain has always thought the world of CINDERS AND ASHES and his confidence proved well placed. He has been quietly campaigned in the north by his trainer this winter but it was always felt he would improve once encountering better ground. He settled just off the pace on the inside under Jason Maguire and although he was always travelling within himself, he did not help his cause with a couple of jumping errors. One came at the last hurdle as he was delivered to win the race but it did not halt his momentum too much and he was always holding the pursuing pack. He is around 20-1 for the Champion Hurdle next season but will need to be much slicker at his obstacles - that should come with match practice. Runner-up Darlan is hard as nails and produced a performance deserving plenty of credit. He took a horrible fall two out when leading the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury but had clearly bounced back from that and was unfortunate not to have finished a little bit closer at the line. He was untidy at the final hurdle then almost ran into the backside of Montbazon immediately after the flight. AP Mcoy got him organised and he was closing all the way up the hill - he won't be long before getting back to winning ways. Prospect Wells was another to stick on really well in the closing stages having been hard driven off the home turn and looks worth a try over further while the strong-travelling Trifolium also really stuck his head out when push came to shove close home. Montbazon has bloomed this season and ran a screamer in his toughest test to date. He was awkward at the last hurdle and was perhaps the one from the front quintet who was just coming to the end of his tether. That said, it is impossible to be too critical and he looks a smashing chasing prospect for next season. Allure Of Illusion was next home but never had the pace to get near the front rank while the well-fancied Galileo's Choice got on to the heels of the leaders on the run to two out but that effort was fairly short-lived. A similar statement can be applied to Tetlami while Vulcanite ran a better race than his finishing position having still been in front at the second last before fading out of contention. He can win more races once learning to settle a bit better in the early stages. Distant Memories caught the eye having raced in rear before making quiet progress moving down the hill. He was picking off rivals in the home straight and can also win more races on decent spring ground where speed is the key. Colour Squadron had form with Montbazon to put him right in there at the finish but that was on soft ground and things looked to be happening too quickly for him on ths occasion. He is not one to give up on though and is another potentially smart novice chaser next season. Steps To Freedom had been long-time ante-post favourite for this race after winning at the track back in November. He had not been seen in public since and whether it was ring rustiness or another issue, a lot better was expected.
