Verdict

One of the rides of the week was saved for the finale as Paul Carberry finessed BELLVANO home to give the leading trainer Nicky Henderson an emotional success in the race named in honour of his father. Henderson had told Carberry that he did not want to see Bellvano in the race until halfway up the run-in and the mercurial Irishman followed his instructions to the letter. He had looked to have been worried out of a race under pressure at Newbury earlier in the season but the strong gallop and big field meant he could ease into the race at his leisure. He picked his way through field like a thief in a crowd and only started to set his sights on the front rank on the run to two out. Still fifth at that point but hard on the bridle, he picked off Kumbeshwar at the last before reeling in stablemate Tanks For That with 100 yards to run. He scored going away with loads up his sleeve and will be tough to stop in the Red Rum at Aintree if encountering similar race conditions. Tanks For That was up in the front rank from an early stage and lost nothing in defeat, a statement that also applies to Kumbeshwar. The latter was starting to feel the pinch when he crunched through the second last but he stuck to his guns bravely and deserves another victory after a string of tough and consistent efforts. Anquetta meant it was 1-2-4 for Henderson and he kept on gamely having been close up from the start. King Edmond and De Boitron kept on gamely but the well-backed Kid Cassidy never really looked like giving his supporters any great cause for hope. Henderson rates him as extremely talented and some cover in a big field was expected to help him settle but it all looked a bit too much for him at this stage of his career. He is still just six and there are more races to be won if this experience is not lost on him. Ultimate lost his jockey five out as did last year's winner Oiseau de Nuit - the latter was still travelling well and could have got into the mix. There was more carnage four out as French Opera came down along with Free World while Toubab was brought down. All were towards the rear division and had plenty on their plates to get into the shake-up. Renard clobbered three out and did well to stay on his feet but was held at the time and sensibly pulled up.
