The testing conditions led to a marked reduction in numbers for the second division of a maiden that has a history of producing top-class performers and the ground leads one to be cautious about the merits of the form. However, INCHINA had shown a good deal of ability at this track in October and the market suggested that she had done well over the winter and her supporters were not disappointed. A 360,000 guineas purchase, connections will be keen to pitch her into pattern races after this maiden success and the Swettenham Stakes over this C&D next month is on her agenda. She carried her head a little high, not unlike many of her late sire's progeny, but raced with her ears pricked in the first half of the race and found plenty for pressure to repel her challengers. She always looked to be holding the challenge of Red Hand who had the benefit of a run this season to her name; out of a sister to High Chaparral and Black Bear Island, connections will be keen to secure a maiden success and there should be more to come. Safarjal, wearing a hood for the first time, made good late progress on her fourth start but is already beginning to look fairly exposed. Popular, a sister to Midday, was still contesting the lead at the three pole but was treading water not long afterwards and wasn't given a hard time. Having shown promise on debut, she's worth another chance on better ground. Momentary fared best of the debutantes in finishing just in front of Caphene and Require but all three showed more than enough to believe that they can improve from this and make their presence felt next time with Caphene's finishing effort, in particular, noticeably eyecatching.
