After impressing on debut at this track and winning the conditions race landed 12 months previously by Frankel on his second start hopes had been high for EKTIHAAM but they were tempered somewhat by a modest run in the Dewhurst. Excuses were put forward for the then juvenile who had been described as big and imposing and he went some way to putting that run behind him with a smooth return to action. He had to work quite hard to get on top of Wrotham Heath initially but was well on top at the line having pulled right away from his rival. Connections confirmed that he will be kept at this trip for the time being although reportedly don't have any particular targets in mind at this stage but, wherever he goes, this imposing individual and powerful galloper will be worth keeping onside until his limitations are exposed. Wrotham Heath was well backed to continue the good form of his yard but was a little too free on his reappearance which wouldn't have helped given the conditions. He did, however, keep on for a clear second and can be expected to improve through the season. Similar comments apply to Halling's Quest and it's interesting that his shrewd trainer was prepared to pitch this Southwell maiden winner in at this level and risk his handicap mark. It will be fascinating to see where he heads next and he appears to have plenty of size and scope about him. Gold Rally had won his maiden on heavy ground last term but was always struggling and failed to run his race.
