Verdict

An extremely good renewal of this contest with a handful of Group 1 performers all crossing swords for their first outing of the season. AL KAZEEM provided somewhat of a surprise under a shrewd ride from James Doyle as he made his move from the rear of the field at just the right time when the pace lifted in a rather steadily run contest. He asserted under pressure entering The Dip and although hanging toward the stands' side rail, he went clear in good style and won impressively. Although this was a career-best display, he was still unexposed before this outing and looks to have more to offer as the campaign progresses. The early pace was cut out by Masked Marvel and Quest For Peace and the latter struck to his guns nicely but last year's St Leger winner dropped out rather tamely. A three-furlong dash did not really suit him having been keen enough from the stalls so is one to keep in mind when tackling a sterner test of stamina. Dunaden was another unsuited by the sprint for home considering his biggest win in the Melbourne Cup was over two miles. Nicely backed prior to the off, he got in a bit of tangle behind rivals approaching The Dip but then picked up well despite the front two having already flown. The Ascot Gold Cup looks right up his street. Meandre, Blue Bajan and Fiorente were all done for pace with the former and latter running pleasingly enough on seasonnal debut. Blue Bajan has an entry in the Yorkshire Cup and it would be no surprise to see this tough sort turn up there having just been touched off by Duncan in the race 12 months ago. Godolphin's Sadeek's Song was the first under pressure in what was a tough ask and he finished a well-beaten last.
