A shock result and not only for punters and form experts with the winning owner stating that he had been looking for a claimer in which to run the 74 rated GOOD MORNING STAR. As we saw in the Guineas, three year old fillies can suddenly blossom but, in contrast to Homecoming Queen, there was no suggestion from her trainer that she had been tearing up the gallops. A handicap winner off 67 in January, she had been well beaten in a Beverley handicap behind Cockney Sparrow when trying to make all. It's possible that she benefited from being dropped in for the first time in her career and improved for the change in tactics and she may get the chance to prove that this wasn't a fluke in the Ribblesdale. Either way, she has markedly increased her value as a broodmare. Everlong had tried to make all at a steady pace, as she had in a Newbury maiden but looked to be in trouble when involved in scrimmaging with Betterbetterbetter on the home turn. She hasn't progressed as connections might have hoped for but this was still a fair run and she could be worth dropping back to 10 furlongs given the positive tactics that have been adopted this term. Betterbetterbetter, a superbly bred winner of a polytrack maiden, is an imposing sort and acquitted herself well enough on this step up in class given that she didn't appear to be entirely at ease on the track. She appeared to idle a little when hitting the front suggesting there's room for development and probably did enough to earn herself a tilt at an Oaks although Epsom may come too soon in her career and the Curragh could prove to be a better option. Cubanita travelled well for much of the race but proved ill at ease around the final turns as the pace quickened, changing her legs and struggling to make ground. She held her head a little on one side in the straight and it was a shade disappointing that she only plugged on but this still rates an encouraging return to action and she can pick up some more black type when returned to a more conventional track. Safarjal was always struggling after rearing at the start but wasn't rushed into the race and showed the benefit of that decision when making late headway having raced wide off the final turn over a trip that her pedigree suggests could stretch her. She reversed Newbury form with Inchina who lost a good early position and palpably failed to build on the promise of her maiden success when allowed to dominate; she is worth another chance. Having won a Beverley handicap over a fraction further, it's possible that Cockney Sparrow didn't appreciate the sharp track and slower pace as she failed to get involved from the rear. Connections will understandably be keen to pick up some black type but may be tempted to first exploit a handicap mark that still looks workable. Absolute Crackers was stepping up in trip but her stamina shouldn't be judged on this effort alone as she never looked happy. Dreams Of Fire, a half-sister to Kris Kin, came under pressure a long way out and is likely to have found this ground too testing.
