The news that Long Run scoped badly after the race goes a long way to explaining away the performance of the favourite who had upwards of 11lbs in hand of his rivals on official ratings. It's to be hoped that he suffers no lasting effects and returns to his consistent best. He was not the only horse to run below par with the second highest rated runner, Cape Tribulation, failing to complete. He did finish well beaten at this meeting 12 months ago before bouncing back and connections will be hoping that he can repeat the trick. Last season's Jewson Novices' Chase winner, Benefficient also failed to reproduce his best form over this longer trip and will surely revert to shorter distances. The proximity of Wayward Prince will be used to hold the form down but the nine year old has shown flashes of smart form, including when second in this race last year. While he couldn't be relied upon to reproduce this effort next time, it's more reasonable to hope that HARRY TOPPER can build on this career best performance. Compared favourably with his trainer's Gold Cup winner Master Oats, the six year old was brought along relatively gradually during his novice season but connections may now be forced to step him up to the top level after this performance. Whether he's quite ready for that at this stage of his career is debateable as his jumping still leaves something to be desired and he can get behind in his races. His trainer admitted as much, commenting that he was 'here a year earlier' than he'd expected and he could be difficult to place in the short-term. The third home, Unioniste, is still just five and he ran a perfectly respectable race on his reappearance. His usual sound jumping was in evidence and he was right there until the last. He's entitled to come on for this run and strip fitter next time and would be an interesting contender if allowed to take his chance in the Hennessy although his powerful yard appear to have stronger candidates for Newbury.
