Verdict

OSCAR WHISKY was proven over the track and trip and the ground but he was meeting Taquin Du Seuil on 5lb worse terms than when beaten a neck at this course in November. That didn't stop the money coming for him though and it proved to be spot on as he continued his progress over the larger obstacles. He got a lead for the first time over fences and his jumping, which has improved with each outing, seemed to benefit and he always looked like holding his rival on the run-in in a race where six fences were omitted due to standing water on the track. The Jewson Novices' Chase is the obvious target for him (although he will also be given an entry in the Arkle) and he must go there with leading claims assuming that everything goes according to plan on his next intended start. Taquin Du Seuil's jumping came under pressure in a furiously run King Henry VIII at Sandown and that may have left a mark as he was still a little sticky here. Although he's clearly not far behind, he will need to improve his fencing if he's to compete with the best in this division but there's every chance that he can do so as he develops. Close House wasn't done with when falling behind Oscar Whisky and Wonderful Charm at the last meeting here but was readily left behind. He was always likely to find this trip on the sharp side but has got a clean round under his belt and should come into his own when stepped up in trip in handicap company. Timesawastin was up against it on the figures and was not disgraced.
