They went a sensible gallop in what had become attritional conditions after some heavy showers had hit the course and a good finish was fought out by Sam Winner and SMAD PLACE, both of whom were thought to prefer better ground. The latter can't take too much racing but this smart hurdler has made a decent start to his chasing career, one minor mishap beside, and jumped like an old hand as the race developed to make the most of the weight that he received from his rival. He was clipped by a couple of points for the RSA Chase to a price that looks a little short on what he's achieved over fences but he's twice been placed in the World Hurdle and he would clearly be in the mix if able to reproduce that level of form over the larger obstacles. Sam Winner spent rather too long in the air over some of his fences and that would be a problem in Grade One company so it wasn't surprising that the bookmakers left him unchanged for the RSA Chase. He was, however, cut for the National Hunt Chase and that looks his natural target although his trainer does have an unenviable record in that particular race. This fellow jumps safely, stays well and has picked up plenty of experience over fences and will go there as one of the leading players albeit without putting down a really strong marker. Mendip Express was under consideration for both races having done everything right so far this season but plans are presumably under review after the wheels came off. He didn't jump as well as he has done and perhaps found conditions too testing but he rarely looked like living up to his favourite's tag and is left with something to prove although he was up against two useful rivals having won a handicap last time.
