Super League: Six-try Wakefield tear apart Castleford on dramatic night
Last Updated: 30/03/13 3:09pm
Wakefield Wildcats defeated Castleford Tigers 37-16 in a match abandoned seven minutes before the end after a stand had to be evacuated.
The visitors had just scored their sixth try in the West Yorkshire derby when spectators were told to evacuate the Princess Street Stand at the Tigers' Wheldon Road ground.
The club issued a public call for an electrician and the fire brigade were summoned amid concerns that a bulb in one of the floodlights above the stand was on fire, although an inspection by the fire brigade found this was not the case.
Referee Ben Thaler had stopped play and, after a delay of around 10 minutes, blew for full time with player safety in mind.
If, as seems certain, the result is allowed to stand, it condemns the Tigers to the foot of the table for the first time this year after going down to a fifth successive defeat.
Richard Agar's Wakefield side stormed into a 25-0 half-time lead and withstood an early second-half fightback to register their third victory of the campaign.
Tries from Tim Smith, Danny Kirmond, Peter Fox and Richard Mathers - all converted by Gary Sykes - put the Wildcats firmly in the driving seat.
However, two tries within six minutes of the turnaround from Jordan Thompson and another with 15 minutes left from Richard Owen gave the hosts a fighting chance.
But Fox crossed for his second and Lee Smith rounded off the scoring before the late drama unfolded.
