Cowboys stun Roosters to make NRL Grand Final

North Queensland Cowboys stunned the Sydney Roosters 29-16 to reach their third Australian National Rugby League Grand Final in Sydney on Saturday.

They will now face Melbourne Storm in the season decider on October 1.

The Cowboys continued their incredible surge through the finals series from eighth position with upset wins over defending champions Cronulla Sharks, Parramatta Eels and the Roosters to reach the Grand Final.

Led by influential scrum-half Michael Morgan, the Cowboys led 8-6 at half-time and fought back from twice behind in the second half to finish the stronger.

The Roosters, who finished second on the regular season standings behind the Storm, were bidding to reach their seventh Grand Final this century.

The Cowboys, who have had to make the 1600-kilometre (1000 mile) journey from their home base in Townsville in far north Queensland to Sydney for three consecutive weeks, now get the chance to win their second NRL title.

North Queensland won their first Grand Final two years ago with a memorable extra-time win over the Brisbane Broncos 17-16 with a winning drop goal from Test star Johnathan Thurston.
