Australian club Penrith Panthers have expressed an interest in signing Wigan forward Gareth Hock once his drugs ban is over.
Hock, 27, tested positive for cocaine in June 2009 and still has nine months of a two-year punishment to serve.
Wigan have hinted that would be prepared to welcome him back but they could face competition from Penrith, who have been impressed by the impact made by Hock's former England team-mates Gareth Ellis and Sam Burgess in the NRL.
"We have had a look at him and there is no doubt he is a world-class player," Panthers chief executive Michael Leary told the Australian magazine Rugby League Week.
"We got excellent reports on him and his ability over there from people in the know.
"They told us he is the same calibre of player as Burgess and Ellis and has the talent to make a real impact on games."
