The 21-year-old was only recently released by the Black and Whites and played for the York City Knights in their 52-4 defeat to Championship rivals Leigh on Sunday.
Nicklas made 10 Super League appearances during his career at the KC Stadium but had yet to appear for them this season and was playing for York on dual-registration terms.
In a statement on their website, York said: "York City Knights can confirm that Danny Nicklas has left the club to sign for Super League club Hull KR.
"Nicklas has been an instrumental player in many of the Knights performances this season, predominantly while on dual-registration from Hull FC.
"We would like to thank Danny for his efforts and wish him well in his future career."
Knights coach Gary Thornton, however, admitted the player's move to the Robins had come as a surprise to him.
"Hull decided to terminate his contract and my understanding was he'd focus on playing for us but it seems Danny and his agent saw things differently," he told the Yorkshire Evening Press.
"I don't think Hull would have released him if they knew this would transpire but there was nothing in an exit clause and he became a free agent."
