The 33-year-old had agreed a two-year deal to play part-time rugby with Championship One club Gloucestershire All Golds along with joining the Warriors' coaching staff.
However, he wanted Wigan head coach Shaun Wane to give him another top-flight chance and impressed sufficiently to win a 12-month playing contract.
Now, instead of preparing to play in rugby league's third tier, James is set for a role in next month's World Club Challenge against Sydney Roosters in Sydney.
James, who had a brief spell at Wigan earlier in his career, told Sky Sports: "It's a dream come true to be able to play back here again. I'm a different player from when I was here in 2006.
"I'm really relishing the opportunity that Shaun Wane has given me. At the end of the year I was given the opportunity to join the coaching staff here, to work with the Under 19s.
"After the World Cup I approached Waney (Wane) and said 'Would you give me a shot?' He watched me in the World Cup and was impressed by what I did so he said that he would give me a go.
"A team like this I think they only want to get bigger and better. To win everything is the next thing. If I can add to that in any way then I'm relishing that opportunity.
"It doesn't get any bigger then that (to play the Roosters). To fly half way across the world and play Australia's best is phenomenal.
"Hopefully I'll get to go on the trip. He's not announced the squad yet. I'm hoping that I'll go, but if not I'll stay here train hard and rip in when they get back."
The former Crusaders and Salford man has not ruled out extending his Wigan deal beyond the end of the season, adding: "I'll see how the body's going at the end of the year.
"If it comes to the end of the year and I've played a few games and Waney wants to keep me I wouldn't hesitate at signing again, but I'm not looking that far ahead at the moment.
"I'm just want to impress him as much as I can and hopefully make the squad and see what happens from there."
