Newcastle Knights winger Josh Mantellato admits he is open to a Super League move after being heavily linked with Hull FC.
The 27-year-old suffered an injury setback on his NRL debut and has struggled to regain a starting berth with the Knights ever since.
Mantellato scored a try and kicked three goals on his Knights bow against the South Sydney Rabbitohs last season but cracked his rib in the process, leaving him sidelined and then demoted.
If I did have the opportunity to go overseas, I would probably take it.
The flyer got his second shot at first-team action in the Knights’ 38-18 defeat to New Zealand Warriors this term, but a lack of opportunity has led Mantellato to explore options abroad.
‘‘If I did have the opportunity to go overseas, I would probably take it,’’ Mantellato told the Newcastle Herald.
‘‘I’ve only heard a bit of chat about it. My manager is looking after me in that regard.
‘‘I do realise there’s heaps of young kids and real quality young footballers coming through and I’ve got no chance of holding them back, so I’ll have to look elsewhere. If it all comes through, it would be a really good opportunity.’’
Despite again being the leading point-scorer in the New South Wales Cup with 168 points, Italian World Cup representative Mantellato has been overtaken in the club’s pecking order by Sione and Chanel Mata’utia and Jake Mamo this season.
