Watching Ben Westwood in action now, it's hard to imagine that his dad once thought he'd be 'too soft' to be a rugby league player. How wrong he was.
Nowadays he's renowned for his implacable nature out on the pitch. He's there for all the heavy work and he leads by example. Not so on the training field though. One team mate put it succinctly: "Plays like Tarzan, trains like Jane".
In this week's Super League Super Stars Westwood confesses to his aversion to training, as well as the incident that might have cost him a GB cap. He also discusses with me the ups and downs of a career that began as an apprentice at Wakefield Trinity and progressed to a nomination for Man of Steel.
The early years at Warrington were not particularly auspicious ones for Westwood, as he struggled with form and adapted to a role change from centre position to the pack.
However with the arrival of Tony Smith at the club, the transition from a team of also-rans to three times cup champions began. And with it, the transition of Westwood from bench player to team stalwart.
This year he celebrates his testimonial...ten years at a club he didn't really want to join at the start. Now it would be hard to imagine a Wolves pack without Westwood, and the fans love him.
Tough as granite but softly spoken, he's also been described as the self-appointed funniest man in the team. He certainly makes the fans smile with his tenacious, tireless efforts in the primrose and blue of Warrington.
Super League Superstars Thursday, at 9.30pm on Sky Sports 4 HD.
