Relegated London Broncos have snapped up Wakefield Wildcats full-back Richard Mathers on a two-year deal ahead of their Championship campaign.
The 30-year-old announced his intention to leave the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Tuesday via Twitter before penning a two-year contract with the capital side.
Mathers joined the Wildcats from rivals Castleford Tigers in 2011 and scored 21 tries in 64 appearances for the club, but the lack of a new contract offer prompted a departure and drop to the second teir.
I met with Joey up in Leeds last week and I've spoken to him numerous times on the phone and really liked the ideas.
The Leeds-born back boasts a wealth of Super League experience having represented Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves and Broncos coach Joe Grima believes the two-cap England international will impress in the Championship.
"He will be one of the highest profile players in the Championship next season,” Grima told the club’s official website. "His experience will be great for the Broncos as Richie is close to playing 300 games in the Super League.
"This signing is an indication of how serious we are about where we want to be in 2015 and beyond and we look forward to welcoming Richie, Sasha and family to our club.”
Despite leaving Wakefield with a heavy heart, Mathers is relishing the prospect of a move to London after convincing discussions with Grima.
"It's a massive move for myself and my family,” the Leeds-born back admitted. "It's an exciting one and we're just at the planning stage of moving and bringing the family down and starting a new adventure.
"I've always enjoyed the trips down when I've played at The Stoop and different places and I've always enjoyed being down in London.
"I met with Joey up in Leeds last week and I've spoken to him numerous times on the phone and really liked the ideas. He sold the place, not just on the club and the footy, but as a place to live and the whole package.”
