The 34-year-old had been closing on a playing return following a neck problem and Smith was planning on utilising him in Sunday's Challenge Cup fourth round clash at Keighley.
However, his eagerness to face the Cougars he suffered a setback in training, although the former Leeds Rhinos boss does not anticipate him missing more than three games.
Briers is set to sit out Warrington's Super League clash against the Bradford Bulls this weekend, although he could now return for their fifth round tie on May 12.
"He was trying to cram a lot of training into a short period of time after he got the all-clear on his neck," Smith told the Warrington Guardian.
"There is a little tear in his calf and the plan had been to get him back for the match against Keighley but because he'd missed so much training it probably took its toll on him.
"I'm hoping he'll be back in the next two to three games."
