The Black and Whites were beaten 22-16 by Huddersfield at the KC Stadium on Sunday and Giants coach Paul Anderson was not happy with an Ellis challenge on Luke Robinson.
And the Rugby Football League's match-review panel have decided to charge Ellis with a grade B offence, which carries a one or two game suspension.
Ellis could accept a one-game ban and submit an early-guilty plea but that would guarantee he will be on the sidelines for Saturday's cup tie in Perpignan.
However, if he opts to fight the charge at a disciplinary hearing, he could be banned for two matches if found guilty.
Ellis was also given a caution for dangerous contact in an unrelated incident from the same match.
Dragons duo charged
The Dragons have disciplinary problems of their own concerning prop Julian Bousquet and centre Mathias Pala following Saturday's 34-28 win over London Broncos.
Bousquet is accused of a grade C dangerous tackle and, having received a four-match ban earlier in the season, he is not eligible for an early-guilty plea and is facing a Tuesday hearing.
Pala has been charged with a grade B offence of striking and is eligible to make an early-guilty plea.
Castleford prop Ryan Boyle and Wigan hooker Logan Tomkins also have until 11.00am on Tuesday to decide whether they will accept Grade B charges arising from incidents which occurred at the weekend.
