Hull FC forward Chris Tuson has announced his retirement due to a recurrence of a back injury.
The 26-year-old initially suffered the injury during pre-season training following his move to the KC Stadium from Wigan.
He returned to action in the game against Bradford on March 7, but suffered further problems during the home defeat to Warrington on July 4.
Tuson has since undergone a range of tests and has been advised to hang up his boots as a result.
He told Hull’s official website: “I am extremely disappointed to have to finish my playing career in this way, but my health and well-being has to come first.
"I have received first-class support from the medical staff here, the specialists, and of course my family. It was a very difficult decision to make, but it is the right one.
"There were discussions about playing on, but I can't be sure how the injury would react and any wrong move could make it much more serious."
Tuson is now set to take up a non-playing role with Hull and will join the club’s coaching team as assistant coach of the U19 team as well as acting as player welfare officer.
Head coach Lee Radford said: “It is a very sad day for Chris and for the club as he is an influential player both on and off the field.
“As one door closes, another opens, and we're really looking forward to having Chris on the coaching team.
“He has a winning mentality and the young players in the Under 19s will learn a lot from him.”
