Brett Finch claims Wigan will be aiming to put down a marker when they meet Warrington in Friday's Stobart Super League clash.
The winners of the derby at the DW Stadium will leapfrog leaders Huddersfield, at least for 48 hours, striking a psychological blow against one of their main title rivals.
"We missed a golden opportunity against Widnes a fortnight ago, when we let ourselves down there," said Finch.
"Even though it's early in the season and probably won't have a bearing on what happens at the end of season, it would be good for our confidence to get a win against a strong team like Warrington."
Wigan got back to winning ways following their shock defeat at Widnes but Finch admitted they will need to improve on Sunday's 42-30 triumph over London Broncos.
"It was good to get back in the winners' circle," the half-back said. "We probably didn't play that well.
"Our defence is one thing we weren't happy with. We need to improve that area. We've been pretty poor the last fortnight.
"To concede 30 points back to back is not good enough for us and Shaun (Wane) certainly let his feelings known to us.
"If we leak 30 points against Warrington, that's as good as the game over. They're a quality side and they've been the benchmark in the competition for probably the last 18 months.
"We see it as a real good challenge to see where we're at. They love to throw the ball around and they'll attack from anywhere on the field so it should certainly be a good spectacle from a fans' point of view.
"They've a lot of individuals who can turn the game with a single play."
Warrington expect to have full-back Brett Hodgson in their team after he missed their last two games with a back injury.
