Huddersfield skipper Danny Brough will captain Scotland when they defend their European Championship title this autumn.

Brough has spent the last two autumns playing for the Bravehearts and will again turn down the chance to have a full off-season as the Scots build towards the 2016 Four Nations Series and the 2017 World Cup.

Named this week in the Super League Dream Team after helping the Giants reach the semi-finals, the 32-year-old will equal Andrew Henderson's record of 21 caps if he plays in all three matches.

"I'll be playing for Scotland," said Brough.

"Steve (McCormack, coach) is a top bloke and I enjoy playing for him. While I can keep running about and get picked I'll continue to do that."

It would have been easy for him to say 'I need a rest' but, from the start of preparations for this year's European Championship, he said he wanted to play.

McCormack said: "It tells you everything about the man. It would have been easy for him to say 'I need a rest' but, from the start of preparations for this year's European Championship, he said he wanted to play.

"That has a huge effect on the rest of the group and a massive impact on how we play. Having one of the world's best half-backs leading us is superb and brings out the best in the players around him."

Brough is one of five Super League players in an initial 29-man squad, which will be reduced to 20 for the opening game.

Hull KR prop Adam Walker and Widnes forward Ben Kavanagh, who is currently on loan at Wakefield, are among 12 survivors from the squad that reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2013.

Salford hooker Liam Hood returns for the first time since winning his only cap in 2012 and Wakefield forward Jon Molloy is one of nine uncapped players in the squad.

Scotland begin their campaign with a game against Wales in Wrexham on 16 October.
