Aviva Premiership semi-final: Leicester Tigers beat Harlequins
Last Updated: 11/05/13 7:21pm
Tries from Vereniki Goneva, Niall Morris, Tom Croft and Mathew Tait saw Leicester Tigers beat Harlequins 33-16 and reach their ninth consecutive Aviva Premiership final.
Three penalties from Nick Evans gave the visitors a 9-3 lead and hope of causing an upset at Welford Road.
But the Tigers asserted their dominance with a try from Goneva on the stroke of half time and touchdowns from Morris, Croft and Tait in the second period.
Ross Chisholm ran in a late consolation try for last year's champions but it was too little, too late as the Tigers set up a final clash with either Saracens or Northampton at Twickenham on May 25.
Following a tight opening period, Leicester wrestled control when Quins' England scrum-half Danny Care received a yellow card early in the second half.
With the dangerous Care out of commission, Leicester made the visitors pay, scoring 10 unanswered points when Toby Flood kicked a penalty and converted Morris' try.
Care then returned, but within a minute Leicester were out of sight after Croft left Quins' defence for dead with a searing burst that ended the game as a contest.
Quins were then faced with a painful damage-limitation exercise as the clock ticked down, but there was still time for Leicester to inflict one more wound as Tait crossed eight minutes from time.
Flood chipped in with 13 points from three penalties and two conversions in the victory.
While Chisholm had the final say, it was a day when Leicester once again flexed their collective muscle as true English heavyweights, a performance that should install them as title favourites.
Quins, who had been chasing three major trophies this term, will end it with just the LV= Cup in their possession.
