Springboks captain agrees 18-month deal

South Africa captain John Smit is set to be unveiled as Saracens' new marquee signing for next season. Saracens have agreed an 18-month deal to sign the Springboks hooker, who has been capped 102 times, from the Sharks. Smit will join Saracens after the World Cup in November, with the club expected to officially confirm the deal at the end of his Super Rugby commitments with the Sharks. The 33-year-old will provide competition across the front row - with compatriot Schalk Brits and England Under-20s captain Jamie George also competing for the No.2 jersey. Smit will be the latest South African to arrive at Vicarage Road, with the likes of Brits, Deon Carstens, Justin Melck, Ernst Joubert, Neil de Kock and Derick Hougaard among those plying their trade at the club.
