Peter Kimlin's loan spell at Exeter has been brought to a sudden end after the Australia international damaged his knee in training.
Kimlin, who only joined the Chiefs on a short-term deal to regain his fitness, has suffered knee ligament damage after colliding with Paul McKenzie on Monday.
And after being told he now faces up to 12 weeks on the sidelines, the 25-year-old will now return to the Brumbies for rehabilitation ahead of the Super 15 season.
"It's a frustrating time for Peter, he came over and we anticipated him being involved in a bit more rugby," said Chief head coach Rob Baxter.
"He arrived too late for us to get him involved in the early European games, that held him back from the next round of Premiership games and once he got his feet under the table and an A game under his belt we then ran into the three foreigners rule, with Steeno getting injured and Ignacio Mieres starting to feature in the squad.
"That held him out for another week and then this week in training he's picked up a knee injury that will keep him out for the rest of the time he's here with us.
"It's very unfortunate for Peter as he was looking to have a big pre-season running into the Super 15s for the Brumbies, but these things do happen in rugby."
