McKenzie took the Wallabies reins from Robbie Deans after the recent 2-1 series defeat to the British and Irish Lions.
Horwill knows the new incumbent extremely well having served as his club captain at the Queensland Reds.
Horwill feels McKenzie can replicate the success he had at Super Rugby level with the Reds having led the Brisbane-based franchise to the 2011 Super Rugby championship.
"He's a very intelligent coach that looks at the game differently," Horwill told ABC Grandstand Sport.
"That's something that has been really impressive that I've found with him is his ability to change game styles and the way we play suited to different opposition.
"Obviously Test rugby is different to Super Rugby but I feel he has got the ability to do that with the coaching structure and they way he is going to coach the team."
Horwill insisted McKenzie will quickly and decisively get his ideas across to the Wallabies group, starting with his first match at the helm against New Zealand in Sydney next month.
"I think he will bring an understanding of the way we want to play and how we want to play," he continued.
"I think there will be no gray areas in what is expected on the field and off it."
