Wales coach Warren Gatland has welcomed the Welsh Rugby Union's changes to its international player selection policy.

The new rules, which follow the Australian caps system, mean players who have won less than 60 caps and play abroad will not be eligible for selection.

"We've put something in place that we feel is the right number," said Gatland. "It means that players who have given a significant contribution to Welsh rugby can make a decision as to whether they decide to play outside of Wales."

The changes replace the so-called Gatland's Law, which used a wildcard system allowing four players based outside Wales to represent their country and failed to prevent many players from moving abroad.

Rhys Webb and fly-half Dan Biggar are among the players who may be affected by the changes.

Webb, who has only been capped 28 times, is set to play for Toulon from next season meaning he will be ineligible if that move goes ahead, meanwhile Biggar has agreed a deal to sign for Northampton Saints for the 2018/19 season.

But Gatland insists the move is the best long-term solution, saying: "The bigger picture is about what is best for Welsh rugby. If players make decisions to leave, that's disappointing but it's trying to find a balance with what is right for the national team and what is right in the long-term for Welsh rugby.
