Former England captain and head coach Martin Johnson has defended the training methods used by Eddie Jones after criticism.

Martin Johnson has praised Eddie Jones for the job he has done with England so far and backed his high-intensity training camp.

Jones came in for criticism in some quarters after overseeing a camp which saw Sam Jones break his right leg and suffer ankle damage during a judo session, while Bath winger Anthony Watson sustained a broken jaw during a training session.

Despite the injuries, vice-captain Mike Brown said the camp was exactly what the team needed to be prepared for Test match rugby and 2003 World Cup winning captain Johnson has echoed those sentiments.

"He's done really well, winning games and he's got to keep on winning them," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "They've got a big autumn series coming. South Africa, and Argentina will be a really tough game as well so I'm looking forward to it.

"You've got to train hard. People get hurt, people are always going to complain, it's never great but you've got to train hard, you've got to train harder than you play, really.

"Occasionally guys get injured and that is part of it, it's never great but it's part of it unfortunately.

"It's not about a learning curve, it is what the game is - it's a hard game so you've got to train for it to be hard. We trained hard, simple as that, we trained physically and guys got hurt occasionally, it is part of it."

Johnson was speaking at Pennyhill Park as he took in an LA Rams training session ahead of their NFL clash with the New York Giants at Twickenham on Sunday.

It is the first time the home of English rugby has hosted an NFL fixture and Johnson says it will be an historic occasion.

"That's the world now. Wembley has hosted a load, the Premiership has been taken abroad, that's just the way the world is," he said. "Everyone wants to spread their sport so it'll be interesting, it'll be historic for the first NFL game at Twickenham.

"We've had a rugby league team play there 20 years ago and that was seen as ground-breaking so it's not that shocking. It should be a great day really.

"I'm a [San Francisco] 49ers fan so keep that quiet because these are historical rivals. But it's a good match-up actually, Rams and Giants, historic match-up and Twickenham's first game so should be good."
