The defending champions were high on confidence going into the match having beaten pre-tournament favourites Fiji in Saturday's pool game.
John's team failed to reach the level they had against Fiji though and eventual winners New Zealand won comfortably, 26-10.
"The boys put in a huge performance yesterday against Fiji but we couldn't follow it up today against New Zealand," said John.
"We made too many basic errors so we are slightly disappointed in the manner of our exit in the tournament.
"We didn't reach the standards we played yesterday so it's disappointing to go out on that note."
The Wales boss felt it was a mixed tournament overall for his team and that they must show more belief in future meetings with the Kiwis.
"Looking back at the tournament, we have proved we are a very dangerous side. We let in a few tries against Tonga but beat Fiji, so we've had a few ups and downs but that's the nature of Sevens," he added.
"I just think we have to believe in ourselves a bit more when we come up against New Zealand in the future."
