Venter, who has previously held the same position at both London Irish and Saracens, has joined the Sharks ahead of the Currie Cup.
The 43-year-old returned to his homeland in 2011 but has continued to work with Saracens as a consultant. He joins another former Springbok at Kings Park after former captain John Smit was recently appointed CEO of the Durban based outfit.
The news was revealed by the club's official Twitter account: "Brendan Venter has been appointed Director of Rugby at The Sharks, effective from the start of the Absa Currie Cup #SharksRugby"
The Currie Cup starts up again in August and the Sharks will be hoping to go one better than last season's 2nd placed finish.
