Australia centre Matt Toomua has been ruled out of the Tests against Scotland and Wales due to a hamstring injury.

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie confirmed that Toomua suffered a hamstring strain during training and will play no further part in the autumn internationals.

McKenzie also announced that Toomua will be replaced in the squad by Waratahs winger Peter Betham, who made his Australia debut in last month's Bledisloe Cup clash against New Zealand.

Toomua, 23, has impressed since earning his Wallabies debut earlier this year, making 10 appearances and featuring in all three of Australia's tour matches this autumn.

"Matt has had a fantastic season and has done a terrific job for the Qantas Wallabies in a new position," McKenzie said.

"It's extremely disappointing to lose him at this point and not have him available for our final two games.

Positive attributes

"However, he's shown all the positive attributes we want in our players and are looking forward to seeing him use his international experience to continue his development during the Super Rugby competition next year."

McKenzie will be forced to field a much-changed line-up for Saturday's encounter with Scotland at Murrayfield.

Toomua's fellow centre Tevita Kuridrani was hit with a five-week suspension for a dangerous tackle in last week's win over Ireland, while five other players will serve a one-match ban after breaching team restrictions on alcohol.

Wingers Adam Ashley-Cooper and Nick Cummins, front-rowers Tatafu Polota-Nau, Benn Robinson and Paddy Ryan and flanker Liam Gill have all been disciplined for taking part in a drinking session three days before facing Ireland.

Ryan will serve his ban in Australia's final match of their European tour against Wales on November 30.
