Uncapped Tolu Latu has replaced Tatafu Polota-Nau in Australia's squad for their Rugby Championship opener against New Zealand in Sydney on August 16.

Hooker Polota-Nau damaged a medial ligament in his right knee during last weekend's grand final between the Waratahs and Crusaders.

Polota-Nau, a veteran of 49 Tests, will be assessed again in two weeks and could return for the Wallabies' second match in Auckland on August 23. The 21-year-old Latu is, as yet, uncapped.

Also sidelined through injury is prop Scott Sio who turned an ankle during training on Monday.

The departure of Sio, whose five caps have all come from the bench, means a call-up for tighthead prop Laurie Weeks.

Weeks, 22, made his Test debut against France in June.
